Paralegals aren’t lawyers or attorneys. Paralegals, also known as legal assistants are group of men and women who assist the lawyers in the delivery of their legal services. Unlike lawyers, paralegals can’t give legal advice, accept cases and represent clients in court. Instead, they give aid on the lawyers in preparing in your specific cause, dispute, litigation or case, including drafting required legal documents needed by lawyers, conducting legal search / investigations and also the like.

Important Electives Every Aspiring Paralegal Should Consider

Along with your regular courses a paralegal will also be required to take electives to fill up course hours. Some choose to take silly classes that have no real value to their education. You should always choose valuable classes that will teach you something useful and give you an edge against your peers going into the same field.

California Paralegal

There are currently no California laws that govern the licensing of California paralegals. But in an effort to standardize more the parameters of a paralegal’s work from the legal viewpoint, the California Alliance of Paralegal Associations (CAPA) promulgated during the year 2000 legislative session a legislation that aimed to do just that. This legislation was called the Assembly Bill (A.B.) 1761, the pertinent portion of which provides for a definition of the term “paralegal.”

California Paralegals

California paralegals, otherwise known as California legal assistants, are individuals who are “qualified through education, training or work experience to perform substantive legal work that requires knowledge of legal concepts and is customarily, but not exclusively, performed by a lawyer” (National Federation of Paralegal Associations).

In short, California paralegals are non-lawyers but who nevertheless perform much of the same tasks as lawyers do. They usually work under the supervision of a lawyer but may also offer their services independently. Currently, seven out of ten California paralegals work in a law office. Others are employed by a lawyer, government agency or corporations.
